Bastille district is marked by the history of France and the Revolution. Place de la Bastille was constructed on the foundations of the old Bastille fortress and prison, both destroyed during the Revolution. A special design in the paving marks out the contours of the fortress in the current Place de la Bastille. In the middle of the square, the monumental 1840 Colonne de Juillet (July Column) celebrates the overturn of the monarchy of Charles X.
