Place des Vosges, a district rich with French history

Amongst all of Paris's districts, Place des Vosges occupies a special place and gets history lovers dreaming. The Place des Vosges district is located in the heart of the historic Marais district. History and bustling life are closely intertwined in this district, which is very popular with both Parisians and tourists. For a bit of peace and quiet, there's nothing quite like a morning stroll around back streets steeped in history.

When place des Vosges, beautiful stones and gardens tells history of Paris

It was Henri IV who ordered the construction of Place Royale in 1605 to give Parisians somewhere to walk. Nobility, the well-read, and the rich bourgeois classes then had illustrious mansions built nearby. Over time, Place Royal became Place des Vosges in 1793, as a tribute to the first district to pay its taxes. Place des Vosges itself is one of the must-see places in Paris. The Hôtel de Sully is one of the finest examples of Louis XIII architecture. A little further away, the fascinating Musée Carnavalet is dedicated to the history of Paris.

Place des Vosges, convenient for shopping

The Marché Bastille, the most bobo (bourgeois bohemian) market in Paris, has a vast array of stands and is held every sunday morning on Boulevard Richard-Lenoir, near the Bastille.
