An area that has inspired many artists
Many artists have walked the streets of this neighborhood, many singers have sung its praises, and every street here has a million stories to tell. Rue des Canettes, popular with student youth for many centuries, is well known for its little bars and cafés where people drink up before moving on to the latest cellar bars playing jazz music. And although Saint Germain may have lost some of its village feel, many streets and passageways remain, such as Cour du Commerce Saint André, which has been around since 1735 and is home to Le Procope, the oldest café in France.
A very strong cultural heritage
History is with you every step of the way: as you walk down Rue de l’École de Médecine, you might be interested to know that you are walking on a former Gallo-Roman track. The immense Abbaye Saint Germain des Prés, founded by the Merovingian king, Childebert I, dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries. You can admire the neoclassical Odéon theater, built in the 18th century for the Théâtre Français, and which witnessed the student revolt of May 1968. On top of this, the Palais du Luxembourg, your haven of greenery, isn't too far away.
Transportation and amenities to make your trip easier
Plenty of buses criss-cross the district and there are several metro stations not too far apart so that your visit won't be tiring. Whether you decide to sit down for a full meal or just a snack, you will find businesses open to satisfy your hunger. To visit the Saint Germain district and make the most of your trip to Paris, we have a range of apartments to rent in the area.
A Historic Neighborhood at the Center of Paris
Guests will love the central location of Saint Germain--it provides an excellent home base for exploring all that Paris has to offer. Located in the heart of Paris and replete with elegant buildings and properties, beautiful views, and excellent restaurants, cafes, and bistros, the historic neighborhood of Saint Germain is a perfect choice of location.
Originally the site of a marketplace and annual fair during the Middle Ages, Saint Germain is primarily known for the many 19th- and 20th-century artists and intellectuals who have lived and worked there, including the painter Eugene Delacroix. Saint Germain has great views of landmarks in all directions--the Seine to the north, the Eiffel Tower to the west, and the Montparnasse Tower to the south.
Easy Access to the Best of Paris: Museums, Shopping, Nightlife
Saint Germain borders the lively Latin Quarter, which is home to some of Paris’s best universities, including the Sorbonne. Also in the Latin Quarter you’ll find bustling cafes and restaurants popular with students, and famous bookshops including Shakespeare & Co, where English-language books and newspapers are available. Just across the Seine from Saint Germain is the world-famous Louvre Museum, where you’ll find great works of art from the Mona Lisa to the Winged Victory of Samothrace. Saint Germain is also across the Seine from the fashionable neighborhood of Le Marais, known for its elegant, trendy boutiques and cutting-edge art galleries. Also nearby is the historic Place de la Bastille, famous for its role in the French Revolution, and the surrounding neighborhood of the Bastille, where you'll find the beautiful Canal St-Martin. Looking for an apartment for rent at Saint-Germain in Paris like Hemingway did?
When in Saint-Germain, there is no escape to history: vestiges of the Gallo-Roman period, the medieval abbey torn down by the fires of the French Revolution before being rebuilt anew... Saint-Germain is now a symbol of resilience through history and hardships, as it withstood across centuries to protect freedom of speech and artistic freedom. Today, the neighborhood still carries the proud legacy of artists like Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Juliette Greco, Miles Davis, Salvador Dali, Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Nam Jun Paik... The list doesn’t seem to ever end. To celebrate this golden age of international creativity, many make the pilgrimage to Café de Flore, Les Deux Magots or Brasserie Lipp. For a more didactic experience, note that Saint-Germain-des-Prés also has some high-end museums, such as the Musée Delacroix or Musée du Luxembourg, nestled in the eponymous gardens.
