The 9th arrondissement is arguably the area of Paris that's been the most influenced by Baron Haussmann’s redevelopment work in the 19th century with several of his "Grands Boulevards" traversing the district. There are also several passages (covered passageways built in the 19th century and precursors to today's shopping malls) in the vicinity. On the southern edge of the 9th arrondissement sits the Palais Garner, Paris’ celebrated opera house and home to the Paris Opera Ballet, and on the northern edge lies the foot of Montmartre.
The 9th arrondissement of Paris is made up of the following administrative districts: the Saint-Georges district, the Chaussée-d'Antin district, the Faubourg-Montmartre district and the Rochechouart district
The 9th arrondissement is well-served by metro lines 2, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13 and the RER A.
Home to the iconic "Grands Magasins", some of the best shopping in Paris can be found here. The area south of Pigalle is Paris' newest hipster enclave with its many trendy bars and restaurants. It's also a shopper’s paradise with eclectic clothing and interior decor shops. Rue des Martyrs, another well-known street in the area, offers an interesting assortment of bakeries, cheese shops, delis and markets.
