From administration to nigtlife

Around Nation there are several administrative areas of Paris: the Sainte-Marguerite district to the north, a corner of Paris popular for its nightlife. Many arts and crafts workshops have been converted into lofts popular among the bourgeois bohemian population. To the south, the Picpus and Bel-Air districts were once part of the Saint-Mandé commune before being annexed by Paris in 1860. Nation Place de la Nation provides a real breath of fresh air in the middle of the capital.

Connected to Bastille by Faubourg Saint-Honoré, it is packed with symbols like the central bronze statue: the Triomphe de la République, an allegory showing the spirit of freedom guiding the chariot of universal suffrage. Justice and labor are also represented. In the direction of Vincennes, you can see the monumental Barrière du Trône erected for the collection of taxes. These columns are topped with statues of Philip II Augustus and Saint Louis.

You can walk through the little back streets or take the long, illuminated boulevards to the Seine, the Bastille, or Vincennes.

Transportation and shopping in Nation

Place de la Nation is a big transportation hub. The RER A and metro lines 1, 2, 6, and 9 stop there. There are several stations in the area: Montgallet (line 8), Buzenval (line 9), Avron (line 2), Picpus (line 6) and Rue des Boulets (line 9). As a residential district, Nation has many food stores, in particular small Middle Eastern food stores. Several eateries are dotted around the square and along the main streets.
