The Denfert-Rochereau district gets its name from the huge square at the intersection of Boulevard Raspail, Boulevard Arago, and Boulevard Saint-Jacques. It was named in honor of the French Colonel Denfert-Rochereau, who led the resistance of the Belfort stronghold during the 1870 Franco-Prussian war. Steeped in history, the district now has a lively atmosphere that makes it popular with Parisian bobos (bourgeois bohemians) as well as French and foreign tourists visiting the capital.
