The Obélisque du Louxor stands in the center, in perfect alignment with the Louvre pyramid, the Jardin des Tuileries, the Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe. Standing 75 feet high, it originally came from the ruins of the Temple of Ramses II. Previously known as Place de la Révolution, Place de la Concorde has witnessed some terrible tragedies. For many years, thieves and crooks were guillotined in the center of the square, before large crowds of people. This was the fate of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette during the Revolution.
