Rue du Commerce was the main commercial street of the former commune of Grenelle, annexed by Paris. Despite neighborhood redevelopment, it has retained its original characteristics and its architectural harmony. The façades of the buildings are decorated with sculpted designs, moldings, and band courses, generally in very good condition. Around this main street, in the 1830s, the real estate developer, Jean-Léonard Violet, constructed the roads based on a grid structure, the largest in Paris.
