In 1907, the La Campagne à Paris (Countryside in Paris) cooperative set up a program to build houses near Porte de Bagnolet, on a site riddled with former quarries and therefore unsuitable for the construction of tall buildings. Each one different from the next, 92 small homes intended for a working class population were completed in 1926. This development gives the district a strong identity, an unusual thing in Paris. In other words it is a Parisian neighborhood in all its authenticity.
