Porte d'Aubervilliers, a modern district not far from the attractions of La Villette
It's worth coming to Paris just to discover Parc de la Villette and its many attractions. Within walking distance of La Villette, Porte d'Auberville is a good location just to the west of the park. If you want to visit outside of the area, metro line 7 goes directly to Opéra, the Louvre, and the Marais. Great for families, the Porte d'Aubervilliers district also appeals to visitors because of the proximity of La Villette. One of the oldest train stations in Paris, the Embarcadère de Strasbourg, was built in this district and was later replaced by the Gare de l’Est.
Porte d'Aubervilliers, past and present
The Rotonde de la Villette is an old rotunda that served as a site for tax collection and which was built as part of the Mur des Fermiers Généraux (Wall of the Farmers-General) and designed by the architect Ledoux in 1784. La Geode dates back to the 1980s and is home to a revolutionary IMAX movie theater. The Cité des Sciences in La Villette is a modern museum specializing in the dissemination of scientific and technical culture, with a particular focus on children. It also has a planetarium. Parc de la Villette is the largest green space in the capital which has a very full schedule of cultural activities.
Porte d'Aubervilliers, pleasure at a reasonable price
With its colorful food markets, which are held on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings, Porte d’Aubervilliers has a wide selection of inexpensive gourmet goods. The even more picturesque Marché Joinville takes place on Thursdays and Sunday mornings in Place Joinville. Restaurants and bars are harder to find here. The area is served by Porte de la Villette metro station (line 7).
